The Vice President, Marketing & Membership will translate AASLD’s strategic plan into operational priorities and manage the day-to-day operations of the association’s membership, marketing and communications (key audience, public relations, social/digital, and content marketing), and Association Management System (AMS) teams. The Vice President will be responsible for keeping staff directed and focused on serving its members, delivering on revenue objectives, and the mission of the association. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in membership marketing, communications and demonstrate strong business acumen, embrace innovation, have a motivational can-do approach, and a collaborative leadership style.
The Vice President will directly supervise the Senior Director, Membership & Mentorship, Director, Marketing, Director, Digital Media, and the Director, Data Integrity.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Provide strategic vision, leadership, and oversight of all communications, marketing, membership, and AMS activities to support the AASLD’s mission. Work collaboratively with executive and senior leadership to ensure communications, marketing, membership, and AMS programs build, sustain and support AASLD strategic plan. Contribute to the development of the AASLD’s strategic plan and work plans as well as the overall leadership and management of the organization. Serve as the AASLD’s primary point of contact with the media.
Oversee the annual membership, marketing, and communications and AMS budget development process and monitor and manage the organization’s resources within budget parameters.
Responsible for the organization’s marketing, branding, media and promotion, market research, issues management, crisis communication, and marketing-related customer relationship and engagement activities.
Oversee the design and implementation of strategic communications plans, processes, and products including message development, editorial content, digital and video production, graphics, and data visualization, web content, and social media.
Oversee all public relations/media relations. Develop and implement a public relations strategy that gains positive exposure for the organization, its programs, and initiatives. Maintain existing relationships and cultivate new ones with relevant journalists, editorial boards, and other appropriate outlets to generate broader coverage of AASLD’s mission, programs, and priorities. Facilitate media interviews with appropriate spokespersons and prepare appropriate briefing memoranda, Talking Points and Q&A documents. Manage the development and execution of all public relations campaigns. Refine core messaging to ensure organizational consistency in all aspects of communication including development, organizing, and education.
Membership, Mentorship, and Recruitment
Primary leadership and management responsibilities for all aspects of membership services, membership recruitment, and membership retention. This includes overseeing the administration of membership recruitment and retention plans and membership database integrity and reporting.
Mentorship Programs and Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
Provide management of AASLD mentorship and recruitment programs. Oversees strategies and operations relating to the association’s SIGs.
Association Management System
Responsible for the strategic alignment, planning, production, development, integration and maintenance of critical business systems (AMS, online community platforms and tools) to maintain data integrity, drive member engagement, foster collaboration, increase retention, grow brand awareness, build a knowledge base and generate non-dues and business needs both domestically and globally.
Act as the staff liaison to the Governing Board’s Communications and Technology Committee
Travel to all meetings as required
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with marketing, communications, business or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum 10 years in a senior management role, progressive experience in marketing, membership, and communications preferably in a not for profit environment.
Strong leadership skills
Ability to communicate complex information effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management, and external audiences. Adept at forming and maintaining external partnerships and networks.
Demonstrated record for translating strategic thinking into action plans into results
Proven experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications, and public relations activities. Outstanding communication, public speaking, and advocacy skills. Experience and ability to act as the company spokesperson, as needed.
Demonstrated success in crafting a substantive and cohesive set of messages for an organization, which has been successfully communicated to key audiences and resulted in a measurable difference (e.g., elevated profile, broader visibility, increased funding, or donor support) to the organization.
Knowledge and experience with digital marketing, social media, and content marketing. Broad understanding of, and willingness to stay abreast of, digital and traditional technologies, applications, and processes.
Excellent writing and editing abilities with extensive experience in all forms of corporate and executive communication, from corporate news releases to executive talking points.
Ability to lead and manage change in a positive and inclusive manner and working effectively with a diverse membership
Excellent organizational and project management skills; adept at working under tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously and ability to meet deadlines
Responsible for exhibiting and implementing project management best practices
Experience and a strong understanding of research methodologies, analytic tools, and marketing optimization.
High-level of interpersonal skills and the ability to work with staff and volunteers at all levels
Experience in developing and managing budgets
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with a solid understanding of AMS and database management systems and marketing and communication tools (e.g. web content management systems, Google Analytics, and other web metrics, among others)
Demonstrated experience building, leading, training and mentoring staff to meet performance standards that support the association’s strategic priorities
