The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for leading Cure SMA’s marketing and communications efforts and ensuring those efforts meet the organization’s strategic goals. The Senior Director serves as the lead in a number of key areas, including branding and message development, to maximize Cure SMA’s public profile and reach. The Senior Director works with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate integrated marketing/communications campaigns. The Senior Director supervises four direct marketing and communications staff and provides leadership to staff in other areas of the organization.

Marketing and Communications
Position Cure SMA as a leader in rare disease research, support, and advocacy. Manage the organization’s public profile to increase revenues and expand reach.
Direct all of the organization’s marketing and communications programming, including print, web, email, social media, earned and paid media, and more.
Write both long- and short-term strategic communications plans. Create and maintain budgets to support these plans.
Manage staff on the marketing and communications team. As needed, provide direction to staff in other departments on communications-related topics.
Create and ensure consistent, effective messaging, and adapt messaging to reach multiple target audiences.
Oversee content development for the organization. The senior director will develop, write, and edit content directly, and supervise staff in developing, writing, and editing content.
Serve as branding lead for the organization, ensuring that all communications adhere to the organization’s brand standards.
Oversee Cure SMA’s community education programs, including written materials and interactive education (live or via webinar).
Work alongside Cure SMA’s development team to develop materials and messaging to meet revenue goals.
Lead Cure SMA’s media and public relations efforts
Anticipates and meets the needs of both internal and external constituents.
Fosters open communication and a collaborative environment; knows how to delegate effectively.
Demonstrates the ability to work independently and make strategic recommendations that are in line with the organization’s long-term plans.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Travel required when necessary.
Bachelor’s degree in Integrated marketing, communications, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
At least 6-8 years of relevant experience. Experience with healthcare or disease-based communications is preferred.
At least 3 years experience managing direct reports.
Excellent communications skills.
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
Ability to handle multiple projects at once.
Good discretion and judgment in working with families, legislators or other high-level government contacts, or working with potentially sensitive or confidential information.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experience in database, email marketing, and content management systems; Salesforce or Luminate/Convio preferred, but experience in similar systems will be considered. HTML familiarity. Proficiency in Google Analytics, Google AdWords, and both native and external tracking and reporting tools in major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and managing budgets, and assessing the organization’s needs for resources including marketing and communications collateral, community education, and engagement materials, and more. The Senior Director is also responsible for ensuring that the marketing and communications team appropriately uses Cure SMA resources.
The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications takes ownership of developing and advancing Cure SMA’s public profile. This high level of visibility necessitates good decision-making skills, including the ability to quickly make decisions when called for, and the ability to make deliberative, long-term strategic decisions. The Senior Director works with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. Problems encountered are often complex and require a combination of knowledge, discretion, skilled communications, and emotional intelligence to resolve.
Work is generally sedentary in nature, but requires walking, sitting, traveling, and occasionally standing, bending, reaching, lifting boxes, and unloading supplies. Requires ability to lift 25 pounds or less.
