The Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS), a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization located in Portland, Oregon, seeks a Marketing and Community Engagement Manager. We are looking for a dynamic marketing professional whose skillset experience, vision and passion for the organization will help to propel MYS to the next stage of organizational growth. The Marketing and Community Engagement Manager is vital to the organization and works closely with the Executive Director and Music Director. The Marketing and Community Engagement Manager is responsible for all MYS marketing, communications, and community engagement activities and materials.
Develop annual marketing and communications plan consistent with MYS strategic plan.
Manage marketing/communication strategies and activities to develop and distribute materials and communications to promote MYS organizational narrative, programs and activities, including concerts, student recruitment, MYS special events, chamber music, student stories, etc.
Develop and execute press releases, news stories, event collateral, hard copy ads, signage, etc. This includes graphic design work.
Direct and produce all social media communications in coordination with organizational marketing initiatives and program activities. Manage and update content and graphics of MYS’s social media accounts including but not limited to: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Vimeo in coordination with MYS Executive and Music directors
Initiate and establish relationships with press and media. Manage all media and press relationships, including media lists, community bulletin boards, etc.
Work with staff to develop new communications materials in line with organizational branding standards.
Manage and update content and graphics on MYS’s website in a manner that strengthens the organization’s brand and effectively communicates events and activities.
Manage MYS brand including logo updates, brochures, flyers, letterhead and newsletter.
Produce monthly online newsletter.
Submit all necessary creative files and information to printers, advertisers, collaborating organizations, etc. Manage the printer relationship for all marketing, communication, and development deliverables related to this position
Utilize local advertising opportunities to promote the organization, events, and programs.
Assist with development communications and fundraising campaigns to reach budgeted revenue goals.
Work with MYS staff to identify and implement opportunities for involvement and partnership between MYS and its various communities and constituencies. This includes overseeing community engagement activities and communications around MYS auditions, concerts, outreach concerts, and annual open house.
In conjunction with MYS staff, identify and implement relationships with youth, social service, and arts programs where MYS can partner and offer our services.
About MYS: MYS is in an exciting growth phase with a creative music director, a strong artistic team of 13 conductors, an increasing community presence, and meaningful artistic partnerships. In the past two seasons alone, we have worked with BodyVox’s Junior Artist Generator, members of Grammy nominated chamber orchestra A Far Cry, Fear No Music’s Young Composers Project, and Pacific Youth Choir. In the 2019-2020 season we are thrilled to engage renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter in a three-day residency and concert performance.
Access is foundational to everything we do. We hold 15 in-school concerts at underserved schools each year and offer free beginning strings classes to low-income students in partnership with Multnomah County and the Hillsboro School District. We also manage a robust financial aid program and instrument lending library.
In our 46th season, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony serves over 500 young musicians in the Portland metropolitan area and southwest Washington. The mission of MYS is to educate, develop, and promote young musicians. We believe that the study of music is a vehicle to promote life lessons such as discipline, commitment, and teamwork, and that it is important to encourage the whole student. As such, we structure our programs to give our students the best performance opportunities possible while encouraging balance in student’s lives and involvement in activities outside of MYS. We make music education and performance opportunities available to musicians at all levels of experience and ability, offering 15 ensembles that include orchestra, band, Jazz, and percussion in Portland and Hillsboro. Each season MYS presents four concerts in professional concert halls, 11 community concerts throughout the Portland/Vancouver area, and 15 outreach concerts at underserved schools. The candidate will be an energetic individual with initiative, imagination, and strong organizational, strategic and interpersonal strengths. The position requires excellent oral and writing skills and the ability to market and develop partnerships for an arts-based program.
Related education/experience: 3+ years’ experience in communications, advertising, marketing, or public relations. Bachelor’s degree in communications, advertising, marketing, or public relations preferred. Musical background a plus.
Demonstrated verbal communication skills: communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Spanish a plus.
Demonstrated writing/editing skills: includes strong storytelling abilities.
Demonstrated graphic design skills: experience creating visual concepts using software to develop overall layout and production design for ads, brochures, appeals, and flyers.
Demonstrated computer/AV skills: effective use of Microsoft office suite products, Adobe CS, and experience with HTML. Experience with website design and maintenance, experience with Wordpress a plus. Proficiency with email marketing tools essential.
