Context and Position Purpose The master’s degree in Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership (IAL M.Ed.) in the University of Washington’s College of Education is the cornerstone academic program of the Center for Leadership in Athletics (CLA). The CLA is rooted in the idea that effective leadership is essential within all roles of an athletics enterprise, and can ensure the positive impact athletics can have on student-athletes and broader society. In the spirit of this idea, the CLA serves to enrich the student-athlete experience, through the development of leaders in athletics. The CLA is involved in academic programs, research, coach development, and community partnership work.
The CLA is seeking an innovative and experienced coordinator and educator to serve as the Program Coordinator for the IAL M.Ed. programs. Established in 2006,, this self-sustaining master’s degree program is a collaborative venture involving several faculty members from across the UW, including the College of Education, the Foster School of Business, the Information School, the Evans School of Public Affairs, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, the support of the UW Department of Professional and Continuing Education (PCE), and guidance from a national advisory board composed of prominent leaders in athletics.
Reporting to the IAL Program Director, the Program Coordinator will be based in the College of Education working directly with students and graduates of the program, College of Education and PCE staff members, the program’s Advisory Board, and IAL faculty members and guest speakers. This position will provide integral support to IAL operations and logistics. The Program Coordinator will be expected to be a self-starter, to work effectively across departments to efficiently coordinate program operations, and contribute to the continued innovation and growth of this robust program.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities: In coordination with the IAL Assistant Director and Director, manage the overall marketing and communications operations of the IAL M.Ed. Program, and assist with the daily operations of the IAL M.Ed. program and other initiatives of the CLA. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Lead in the management of CLA/IAL networks, including websites, list-servs and contact databases; develop and enhance content for the program websites to promote and enable effective communication; and coordinate the use of interactive web tools and regular program updates. Oversee, develop and coordinate production of newsletters, briefs, and web materials that promote CLA research and resources for various audiences, including students, professionals, community and research affiliates. Manage regular and timely communication with IAL stakeholders, especially IAL alumni to facilitate an ongoing relationship as they transition out of the program. Responsibilities include scheduling and delivery of ongoing communication and updates; maintenance of student and alumni contact information and updates for enhanced networking, and coordination of recruiting and/or professional development activities.
Assist and support the scheduling and executing of recruiting activities; execute targeted activities to recruit the best students; orchestrate and collaborate with PCE marketing team to develop effective program promotion strategy using the web, PR and advertising; and communicate with prospective students and respond to inquiries. Assist in the coordination and logistics execution for CLA professional development, research dissemination, and outreach events. Responsibilities include promotion and marketing, room and event space reservations, catering, ordering, stocking of supplies and equipment, and technical support for guest speakers. Assist with logistics to support IAL courses and related events resulting in the delivery of high quality, professional educational experiences for IAL students and industry allies. Responsibilities include support of relationships with faculty, lecturers, and guest speakers; direct course support for program instructors; and collaboration with various campus departments and partners providing support services and resources.
Use knowledge of the sports management market and a thorough understanding of curriculum and interpersonal skills, advise students regarding their academic, internship and professional development plans; identify resources for student materials and websites; coordinate with appropriate PCE and College of Education offices for marketing efforts.
Assist the IAL Director with presentation of program statistics and results; assist with the preparation of plans for approval; oversee the design and production of program reports.
Bachelors degree in Marketing, Education, Sports Management, or related field, to include two or more years experience in: - Implementing and managing marketing and communications activities - Implementing and coordinating the complex logistics of multi-faceted programs
Experience with website and social media management Plus: -Strong communication and organizational skills, including the ability to make professional presentations and contribute to professional publications - Knowledge of management and operation of sports organizations - Ability to work some evenings and weekends
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
Masters degree in Marketing, Education, Sports Management, or related field
Additional education in Sports Management/Physical Education
Experience in graphic design
Background in content marketing and storytelling
Coordinating student programs within a major university
Knowledge of career preparation and options for students interested in higher ed and/or athletics
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration.
