The Email Marketing Specialist is part of the Marketing Department within the Communications and Marketing team at Vanderbilt University. This role is responsible for developing and managing email communications, including design, coding, scheduling, reporting, and attribution. Additionally, this position can be performed remotely.
This position works closely with the Assistant Director of Marketing Technology, the Manager of the Email channel team, another Email Marketing Specialist, additional areas within the Communications and Marketing team, as well as Development and Alumni Relations and Athletics. This position requires a unique blend of creative design thinking, rigorous technical competency, and strategic innovation.
Reporting directly to the Manager of the Email channel team, this position does not have supervisory responsibility. This role develops best-in-class emails that engage audiences with relevant visuals, content, messaging, and strong calls-to-action requires. This role does require the ability to report to work in-person on the Vanderbilt University campus according to the needs of the Assistant Director, as well as key stakeholders and business partners.
The Marketing team is responsible for developing and executing strategic content and digital platforms that advance the university's priorities and promote engagement and desired actions across a variety of core audiences. It is part of the broader Communications and Marketing division, a dynamic and collaborative group of staff that develop and execute strategies that inform, engage and inspire others to participate in Vanderbilt University's global academic and research mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
Own the email channel, including coding, design, scheduling, reporting and attribution.
Partner with the creative and content team to develop best in class emails that engage audiences with relevant visuals, content, messaging, and strong calls-to-action.
Developing a robust A/B testing program that drives continual growth from the email channel.
Develop segmentation based on audience behavior to cross-sell and grow engagement.
Collaborate with colleagues to integrate email into a larger, omni-channel customer "journey."
Test and troubleshoot variable data from subscriber lists and schedule all email sends, as well as troubleshoot potential code issues and/or errors.
Deliver analytic reports of email campaigns to determine effectiveness of efforts and to inform development of new strategies.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guideline), CAN-SPAM, and email best practices, including design principles, metrics, data hygiene and compliance.
Stay current on best practices and standards for email marketing and web design
Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Provide email training and support for the larger Vanderbilt Community/internal Vanderbilt teams.

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required .
Thorough working knowledge of the full suite of Microsoft Office products is required .
Applicants must have 2-3 years work experience of coding emails in HTML/CSS with AMPscripting experience is preferred .
A deep understanding of how to build ADA compliant emails that follow accessibility best practices is required .
Previous administrative experience with Vanderbilt University or in a private institution of higher education is preferred .
Prior experience with Salesforce (Marketing Cloud) is required . Including:
Knowledge of Journey Builder and how to build both multi-step and multi-channel journeys
Understands the segmentation and constantly drives toward best practices for segmentation - knowledge of using data extensions and campaigns
Ampscript code skills
Ability to integrate and code tools such as Interactive Email or use dynamic content
Familiarity with Litmus integration is preferred .
Coding experience with Outlook rendering issues, including proficiently in writing Outlook conditional code, is required .
Responsive and mobile design experience
Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator and your preferred code editor is preferred .
