Summary of Duties:
This position will support all aspects of the central University Marketing and Communications (UMC) portfolio, from brand marketing and advertising to executive messaging and enrollment management marketing efforts. This position is an integral part of the UMC team.
The senior marketing writer must demonstrate a strong commitment to creating a diverse, just, equitable and inclusive environment. The selected candidate must have experience writing marketing materials for multiple audiences. Strong organizational and project management skills, as well as a proven ability to work in a matrixed role are essential.
The senior marketing writer reports to the content development director.
Job Duties:
Writing and Communications | 75%
- Conceptualize and produce engaging, original content across all traditional print and digital media platforms that tells the WSU story. Independent content creation will include feature stories, print and digital advertisements, brochures, magazine/e-newsletter articles, web content, audio/video scripts, email, social media, and other promotional materials.
- Engage with units across WSU to advance the university's efforts toward diversity, social justice, equity, and inclusion. Lead content creation pertaining to social justice efforts and sensitive campus issues.
- Facilitate the development of messaging around high-priority university issues.
- Maintain the content calendar for the WSU system homepage and lead the curation of copy on WSU's homepage, including writing lead stories, curating news items, events, etc.
- Interview subjects, write/edit copy, and manage creative process for a range of content pieces across all media platforms.
- Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, quality, and consistency of communications and marketing materials.
Marketing Strategy | 20%
- Partner with UMC leadership to help shape WSU's marketing efforts and messaging around system-wide efforts.
- Identify opportunities to raise WSU's visibility and widen the reach of the university's voice.
- Participate in the creative process with others across UMC and other university stakeholders to ensure university priorities are highlighted in projects, initiatives, and campaigns.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in public relations, mass communications or a relevant field AND three (3) years of professional experience in print or broadcast news media, public relations or marketing including proven experience with writing and editing skills; writing feature articles, brochures, annual reports and speeches; executing strategic communication plans and complex communication projects.
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in writing for a variety of media and styles, including brand stories and profiles, social media content, event promotion materials, blog posts, print and digital advertising and web copy.
- Demonstrated ability to write for executive leadership, including article creation, speech writing/talking points, and organizational communications.
- Experience managing messaging in crisis situations.
- A passion for team building and a strong commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.
- Exceptional relationship management skills and the ability to communicate with tact, professionalism and respect.
- Strong organizational and project management skills; proven ability to work with various constituencies in a matrixed environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education and/or non-profit organization, or experience working in a large institutional or corporate environment.
- Knowledge of print production processes and the understanding of the production of printed pieces from developing and conveying the concept through the design, proofing, and production phases.
