University Communications and Marketing at Carnegie Mellon University is searching for a UI Designer/Developer with demonstrated experience in designing and developing for digital platforms. The division of University Communications and Marketing leads and coordinates strategic marketing and communications for Carnegie Mellon University. They cultivate the CMU Brand and tell the university's stories with a rich and authentic voice.
The UI Designer/Developer will be a core member of the university's digital strategy team. This individual will be the lead designer for cmu.edu's content management system and associated design templates.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys collaborating with a diverse group of people and designing with a user-focused mindset.
Responsibilities:- Advocates on behalf of both front-end users of the enterprise CMS application, and visitors to cmu.edu to ensure that the user remains at the center of every interaction, paying special attention to digital accessibility.
- Plans, develops, and maintains our UI/UX guidelines.
- Develops in modern front-end tools and frameworks (e.g., HTML, CSS, SASS, JavaScript, Twig).
- Works closely with the Creative team to ensure that the interface is an accurate interpretation of the university's brand guidelines, including new designs and refreshes
- Shares UI trends and best practices (including accessibility and visual design) with the team, and applies those to create a flexible, configurable, elegant, and user-centered visitor experience.
- Works alongside the rest of the development team on QA tasks, especially focusing on accessibility testing on each CMS release.
- Uses Agile methodology, providing input on story and task creation and refinement.
- Owns and continually improves the University's pattern libraries for UI, a key set of tools that ensures every online experience at CMU is branded, modern, and user centered.
- Works closely with other development groups to provide guidance on how to implement the pattern libraries correctly and effectively.
- Provides hands-on, front-end development assistance to external development groups as needed.
This position will have contact with a computer monitor for long periods of time.
You must demonstrate:- Expertise in digital/responsive design
- Proficiency in HTML/CSS/JS
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines
- Oral and written communications skills
- Problem-solving and reasoning skills
- Ability to take direction as well as ability to work independently
- Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with teammates and colleagues.
- Ability to adjust priorities to deliver projects to specification

Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in digital design or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- At least 3-5 years of digital design and front-end development experience.
- Successful background check.
- Must be able to travel to on- and off- campus locations as requested; evening and weekend hours may be required.
