Thayer seeks a dynamic, experienced Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) to (i) develop and implement an integrated messaging strategy that will elevate the visibility of the School consistent with its developing strategic plan and enrollment objectives; (ii) ensure that communications and events maximize meaningful relationship building and advance the School’s mission; and (iii) design clear and effective communications that invite all constituents to understand and appreciate the Thayer experience. With 3 direct reports, the CCMO reports to, and is a strategic partner of, the Head of School and works collaboratively with the Senior Administrative Team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate skill and enthusiasm in effectively conveying the entire school story, while being nimble and effective at building cohesion across media platforms.
Essential Functions and Key Objectives - Develop and implement an integrated content strategy to elevate the visibility of the School, with the goal of building messaging excellence and cohesion across different platforms - Ensure brand identity, messaging quality, and consistency throughout all media; implement best practices in digital and all other media
- Develop and implement annual and longer-term marketing and communications plans consistent with the School’s strategic planning process, enrollment management plan and constituent communications goals; conduct and interpret research; lead efforts to enhance Thayer’s presence in local, regional, and national/international media - Oversee the messaging, execution, and design of all school publications, advertising and marketing, particularly in support of Admissions and Development, as well as maintaining, updating and enforcing overall brand and school style guidelines - In partnership with the Admissions and Development teams, ensure all social and programmatic events (leadership, family, alumni, development and admission) are well- planned and executed, and imbued with Thayer’s distinct messaging, culture, and high levels of personal engagement - Develop, mentor and lead the communications and marketing staff; work in collaboration with select communications and strategic/leadership consultants - Partner with the Head of School and other key stakeholders on the development, implementation, and assessment of school-wide strategic initiatives, including a comprehensive strategic plan - Engage fully in the life of the School, with the goal of being well-informed so all facets of the School can be effectively promoted; provide skilled leadership, engaging both with key departments and with all community members to tell the School’s story; demonstrate the effective use of distributed content and the encouragement of constituent writers - Capture and convey the vision and voice of the Head of School and Thayer’s value proposition in written outreach and communications - Act as the point person for all crisis communications, media inquiries, and media engagement - With the Head of School, maintain positive relationships with the School’s neighbors and local town officials; implement a comprehensive public relations program - Develop and maintain relationships with communications and planning offices at peer institutions; attend industry conferences as directed on behalf of the Head of School and provide briefings to the Board of Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team when appropriate

Qualifications and Skills Required for Position - A strong intellect, a vision for effective communications and marketing for an independent school, and 7+ years of senior level experience creating and executing communications and marketing strategies - Outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills; the ability to work collaboratively and proactively with Thayer’s diverse and inclusive community to advance the School’s mission - Demonstrated ability to develop and mentor a team of direct reports - An enthusiasm and energy for telling the School story across various platforms - Demonstrated commitment to and experience in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion - A sophisticated understanding of the complexities of an independent day school - Outstanding written and oral communication skills - The ability to effectively complete all required background checks - Fully vaccinated and able to work on campus full-time
