Reporting to and working collaboratively with the Senior Vice President/Chief Communications Officer, the Managing Director serves as a strategic advisor and thought partner, playing a critical role in the development and the execution of defined strategic imperatives of the Communications and Marketing Department in support of Dana-Farber and its mission.
This position works in close consultation with the SVP, Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CC&MO) and the Department???s Executive Team to shape and expand the Communications and Marketing function, which includes significant transformation over the next three to five years.
The Managing Director is a key strategist and contributor to improving capacity, capabilities, service delivery and supporting infrastructure. This role oversees operations, finance, administrative, and HR functions for the department.??????

Collaborate with Senior Vice President/CCO and other members of the Department???s Executive Team to align departmental strategic imperatives and operations with the overall goals of the Institute.
Support the Department???s Executive Team with driving strategic planning, overseeing plan/program development and running key staff meetings, assisting with team communications, and representing the CC&MO/Executive Team in meetings as needed.
Facilitate key communications for senior level meetings and other recurring department meetings, including Communications Board Committee.
Lead discussions with cross functional team members to prioritize initiatives and proper resource allocation.
Manage a team of communications and marketing coordinators who are assigned to support functioning of the individual team(s), including project management.
Take a leadership role in the oversight and/or development of the department???s Internship Program (leading co-managers), onboarding of new staff, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (ID&E) activities, and CC&MO meeting materials (agendas, PPTs, etc.).
Develop department-wide policies, procedures, and reporting templates to track and measure progress of defined Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
Assist in annual budget planning, monitoring and/or managing budget for the department, including oversight and authorization of vendor invoices and initiation of new vendor set-up and contract management, either directly or in supervision of others in this capacity.
Ensure that all financial commitments and spending are well-managed, including use of preferred suppliers, competitive re/bidding, purchase orders and formal written contracts.
With others in Communications and Marketing leadership, lead efforts to provide a dynamic, engaging and recognition-rich work environment for staff.
Lead dynamic/remote work and other initiatives to sustain staff well-being.??
Organize and provide staffing for large-scale gatherings and events for Communications and Marketing staff, such as all-staff meetings, recognition events, and professional development.????
Recruit, hire, train, and support the growth of Communications and Marketing Coordinators and other administrative staff, including performance evaluation, timekeeping, and other supervisory responsibilities.
Oversee space planning/assignment and primary representative for building operations, as needed.
Oversee and project manage additional ad-hoc strategic projects that span across Department Executive Team.
10 years of leadership experience required, preferably in a highly complex, matrixed organization such as an academic medical center, medical school teaching hospital, research university, or consulting/agency environment.
Experience building critical relationships and collaborations, internal alliances, and long-term partnerships in a complex, matrixed organization required.??
Prior experience successfully managing expectations of executives, senior leadership, and key stakeholders required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Strong knowledge of health care and academic medicine.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint, Visio, Zoom, and Excel with the ability to learn and understand new systems, as the job requires.
Strong strategic thinking and operations/management skills.
