Position Summary
The marketing copywriter will advance the University’s academic programs, recruitment and retention, key initiatives, research, philanthropy and events through compelling messaging that reaches audiences across a variety of print and digital channels. This position will help the Office of Marketing and Brand Strategy continue to create brand awareness with new audiences and elevate the University’s reputation as a public university for the public good with copy that resonates with target audiences and supports a broad range of projects and work performed within the department in support of the University’s strategic plan goals.
Our team supports the mission and business objectives of the University with a focus on the following goals:
- Attract prospective students, parents, faculty, staff, donors, and public and private partnerships
- Engage BGSU alumni, donors, community and partners
- Improve BGSU’s brand reputation with peers, influencers, legislators, regional community and general public
Responsible for:
- Under the supervision of the Director of Marketing Strategy, developing dynamic, creative, on-brand and grammatically correct copy for marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, posters, mailers and other print publications; advertising campaigns, websites; videos; social media and texting; and emails for internal and external audiences.
- Planning and writing compelling marketing messages in a range of voices and styles to reach various audiences and stakeholder groups across all marketing channels and platforms.
- Partnering with units and divisions across Bowling Green State University to develop appropriate messages to fit a variety of needs, providing advice and counsel as needed to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of messages and mediums.
- Proofreading marketing copy from campus partners and other members of the Marketing Strategy team to be used on marketing and communication materials
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
Copywriter
- Create compelling and grammatically correct marketing copy across multiple mediums that clearly communicates client and University objectives in a manner that appeals to defined audiences. This includes persuasive email copy and subject lines, clear and concise website copy, informative but compelling long-form content for print materials such as brochures, and messages for digital screens, social media and other platforms across campus.
- Serve as lead copywriter for annual advertising campaigns, including brand, retargeting and yield, that require inspiring, dynamic and on-brand messaging that moves prospective students and parents toward enrollment at BGSU, as well as other ad campaigns for current and prospective students throughout the year, and individual advertisements to promote BGSU, its programs and public events in various publications and digital mediums.
- Understands the digital marketing landscape and is familiar with copy specifications for social media, digital display and search ads
- Plan and write copy that moves people to the intended action in a range of voices and styles.
- Adapt messaging across channels and for different audiences as part of integrated marketing communications campaigns.
- Partner with units and divisions across the University to develop messages to fit a variety of needs that meet goals and objectives and elevate copy provided by campus partners.
- Help with other writing projects as needed, including news stories and press releases on occasion.
Proofreader
- Evaluate copy against University and Associated Press standards and ensure copy is free of grammar and style errors. This includes copy written by the marketing copywriter, as well as copy from campus partners and colleagues within the department as assigned.
- Copy edits and proofs the department’s publications, brochures, event calendars, reports and other materials.
Project manager
- Manage assigned projects by creating timelines and taking appropriate steps to meet goals and deadlines.
- Collaborate with colleagues across multiple teams in the Office of Marketing and Brand Strategy on creative concepts and to bring projects to successful completion. This includes web developers, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, marketing strategist, social media team and advertising director.
- Communicate with campus partners as needed for input on appropriate messaging and tactics, content curation, drafts, editing and approval of final copy and deliverables.
Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Skilled multitasker with excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting with other writers, editors, designers, photographers and videographers, to develop and execute creative concepts
- Ability to recommend appropriate messaging tactics for desires goals and outcomes
- Broad understanding of marketing and communications principles
- Familiarity and proven abilities with various media including print publications, email marketing and digital marketing
- Strong copywriting skills with knowledge of AP style
- Collaborative work style
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to meet timely and crucial deadlines
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Must have initiative, creativity and decisiveness
Salary
Full-time administrative staff position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Administrative pay grade 355. Full benefits package available.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, public relations, marketing or communications-related field.
The following experience is required:
- 3 or more years of demonstrated writing experience across all communication channels, including advertising, websites, email marketing, social media and/or print marketing materials, with experience writing to different audience segments, adapting tone and style
- 1 or more years of proofreading or editing experience, with mastery of AP style and grammar
- 1 or more years of project management experience
