Director for Community Research Marketing and Promotion
About the Opportunity
About Northeastern
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.
Our locations-in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; Oakland, San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant-are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.
Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs- in a variety of on-campus and online formats-lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.
About the Opportunity
Mills College at Northeastern University invites applications for the position, Director for Community Research Marketing and Promotion, for Northeastern University's newest campus in Oakland, California.
Mills College at Northeastern University is the first bi-coastal university of its kind and fulfills a shared vision for a unique university that leverages Mills' legacy in equity, social justice, and leadership by women and nonbinary people, and Northeastern's tradition of diverse and inclusive global experiential learning and research.
The Director for Community Research Marketing and Promotion will support City to City (C2C), a new initiative at Northeastern University to support community engaged research with the goal of finding equitable solutions to local policy problems (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/ia/c2c/). The C2C team plays a key role in helping create partnerships between researchers and policymakers (city departments, state agencies, and community-based organizations) to co-create data-driven policy analysis, co-design and implement policy solutions, and iterate on program evaluation and development to move the needle on society's most pressing public problems such as crime, housing, public health, and workforce development.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are passionate about forming partnerships for evidence-informed development policy and can bridge the gap between academic knowledge and putting policy solutions into practice. We encourage applications from candidates whose prior work experience addresses social justice and racial equity within the local context. The Director position will be located on our Oakland campus with the option to negotiate a hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
The Director will be a key contributor to our applied research and experiential mission, focusing on local public policy issues. Core responsibilities will include:
Leading the development of research-practice partnerships between faculty and local policymakers or community leaders to produce impactful policy-relevant analysis that lead to real-world solutions. This will involve working closely with faculty across multiple disciplines (e.g., public policy, economics, business, public health, criminal justice) as well as research centers engaged in related work including the Center for Transformative Action, Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, the Boston Area Research Initiative, the Social Impact Lab, and the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research. We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked with city department, state agencies, and community-based organizations to understand their needs, capacity constraints, and perspectives for making use of research evidence.
Developing and managing projects that are supported by the C2C initiative to ensure that the research is responsive to external deadlines and can leverage 'opportunity windows' for changing a policy or practice. This will include meeting with project teams (including both internal and external members) on a regular basis, using project management software to track progress on milestones and external deadlines, and measuring key performance indicators for reporting back to the Provost's Office as well as external funders. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience with providing technical assistance to public agencies and community-based organizations.
Marketing and building awareness and participation for projects that are supported by the C2C initiative is a primary responsibility for this role. This will include leading the logistics, operations, fundraising, marketing, and outreach for convenings and programmatic work. Key items include website development, internal and external communications, disseminating research findings through multiple media channels, marketing programs to appropriate audiences, and hosting events. Candidates with strong writing skills and experience in digital communications, marketing, and outreach are sought.
Working with internal and external vendors to develop and implement two small-scale City to City pilot programs. This will include an executive education program for policy partners and a summer youth employment program for high school students. This will involve working with the vendor to select the curriculum, developing an application process, and coordinating logistics to facilitate program delivery. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience working directly with staff in public agencies or community-based organizations and/or youth.
Managing a team of 3 faculty (one researcher and two policy fellows) and 3 students (post-doctoral researcher, graduate student researcher, and undergraduate co-op student). Depending on the candidate's background and interests, there is the possibility of co-authoring publications (academic or policy papers) and/or teaching one course per year (for additional compensation).
Finally, the C2C Director for Community Research Marketing and Promotion will work closely with the Director for Community Engaged Research to support on developing and writing applications for external funding to bring C2C pilot projects to scale in terms of both implementing solutions and conducting evaluations that generate research evidence.
Qualifications
Knowledge of marketing, project management, community development, and partnerships. Basic understanding of community engaged research, demonstrated interest in public policy and business issues. Excellent relationship management, organization and administration, and communication skills as well as an unequivocal commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Proficiency with Excel as well as project management software and tools (e.g., SmartSheets, Trello). Knowledge and skills required for this position are typically obtained from a Bachelor's degree or higher in business or a social science discipline and at least five years of experience in communications, marketing, project management, community development, partnerships, or public policy. Experience working with public agencies or community-based organizations in some capacity preferred.
