Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for marketing and communications strategy and operations for the American Society for Cell Biology. This position brings market expertise and insight and effectively communicates the society’s value and offerings to grow a broad community of engaged constituents. The Director of Marketing and Communications reports to the CEO and manages in-house staff and external partners.
Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a successful ASCB brand strategy that stretches consistently across the Society’s activities and websites.
- Develop marketing and communications strategy, social media strategy, and fundraising strategy, and ensure alignment with society's strategic plan.
- Develop operational plans and oversee day-to-day marketing and communications operations to support the organization’s various initiatives.
- Work with the CEO and ASCB leadership to identify opportunities to enhance and diversify revenue streams.
- Design and manage all society communication channels, maintaining focus on growing community and impact.
- Manage the marketing and communications budget.
- Manage creation of all marketing assets, including print collateral, advertisements, and sales materials.
- Manage marketing and communications team, utilizing external partners when needed.
- Work closely with all departments to understand marketing needs and target audiences.
- Develop RFPs if needed.
- Manage external sales team to ensure delivery of sales collaterals and fulfillment of advertisements.
- Stay up to date on marketing trends and best practices.
- Implement segmented marketing approaches and use data analytics to drive business decisions.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external society leaders on strategy and performance.
Required:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational abilities and time management skills.
- Consistent execution and deadline-driven.
- Expertise in the latest trends in multi-platform, cross-channel communication.
- Experience managing a website and social media content, newsletters, and other digital communications strategies.
- Proactively interprets data and recommends improvements.
- Strong eye for design and excellent proofing of content.
- Highly collaborative and able to work effectively with hybrid or remote teams.
- Brings new ideas and can work cross-functionally to successfully execute projects.
Background and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of 6-8 years related experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory position.
- Association experience preferred.
- Life science market experience preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Experience with Adobe Design Suite, Canva, or other graphic design tools.
- Expertise with marketing platforms, automation tools, and social media management tools.
- Experience with CMS and AMS preferred.
- Budget experience preferred.
- Project management experience preferred.
Additional Job Requirements
- Some travel is expected and is considered moderate – 2-3 days a month on average with some times of the year being busier than others.
- Preference for candidates in the DC metro area, but open to candidates from across the U.S.
- ASCB requires 1 day in the office for local staff. Remote staff visit the office quarterly.
