Job Description
The Boston University Dean of Students and Division of Student Affairs Departments within the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of the Dean of Students respond to student needs; help students solve their problems; and work with students to create communities. We interact with students and student associations to represent student concerns and to provide programs and services that facilitate both personal and academic growth. Specifically, we advise student organizations; plan ways to acclimate students to the University; set and regulate standards; provide a living room for the campus; give students ways to come alive through their identities and cultures culturally; make certain the University experience is accessible; enrich our surrounding community through service; and create a vibrant and welcoming living-learning environment. The Office of the Dean of Students directs the Division of Student Affairs. The Associate Provost and Dean of Students and staff mentor and counsel and promote an environment that encourages scholarly exchange and individual expression. Our office provides a space that allows students to effectively engage in academic and intellectual work, community service, and other activities that enrich their time at Boston University.
Reporting to the Director of Operations & Strategic Initiatives, the Assistant Director serves as a key operations and strategy administrator for the Dean of Students Office/Division of Student Affairs. Functioning as a communications and digital media strategist for the division, the Assistant Director will coordinate marketing and production efforts for university signature programs and initiatives. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for providing operational support for the student-facing office and programming, and interacting frequently with students, parents, and colleagues across Boston University. The Assistant Director will support the myriad of initiatives that originate within the Dean of Students Office including, but not limited to: website and newsletter management, communications and marketing design work, the management of a student Building Assistant team and other duties necessary for team success. The Assistant Director will play an essential role in narrating a unified Student Affairs brand that promotes a culture of belonging, identity development, and intellectual growth.
The Assistant Director will have a broad range of responsibilities that, when combined, represent the creative and communications content for the Dean of Students/Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director must consider themselves creative, innovative and collaborative. This professional must oversee the strategy and design for and production of printed materials; generate creative content (i.e.: stories, profile projects, Division websites, narratives about institutional events and priorities); maintain and update the Dean of Students website; oversee the production of additional, unit-level websites when appropriate; produce newsletters; advise a student team who work as building assistants; and oversee the social media for Dean of Students/Division of Student Affairs. This individual will also generate internal communications; and serve as a liaison support and help train communications specialists across the Dean of Students/Division of Student Affairs reporting departments in order to help ensure messaging across is consistent.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication, design, and social media skills are a must.
- Strong writing skills and experience in brand management are highly valued/will elevate a candidate.
- Understanding of the current trends and being able to navigate the social media platforms.
- Management experience preferred.
- Bachelor's degree and 3 to 5 years of work experience required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Must have an appreciation for working with college-aged students.
