General Description of the Job Class
The Duke University Health System (DUHS) Senior Communications Specialist coordinates the implementation of internal communications supporting a diverse frontline workforce across Duke University Health System hospitals, clinics, facilities, and offices (onsite and remote). This role will focus on creating content and channels that elevate, celebrate, and honor the work that our teams accomplish every day, supporting a culture where everyone feels respected, heard, and that they belong.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Clinical Operations Communications, the senior communications specialist will contribute to enterprise-wide internal communications initiatives that educate, inform and inspire team members about our mission of advancing health together and our vision to deliver tomorrow's healthcare today.
- Communications samples and a work portfolio are required. Candidates will be asked to complete a written response exercise during the interview process.
- Excellent oral, visual, and social media skills with communications and project management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business strategies to written communications formats.
- Skills and knowledge in leveraging both digital and traditional internal channels to create impactful communications that drive awareness and engagement.
- Able to perform under tight deadlines and shifting priorities and can successfully navigate a complex, fast-paced organization.
- Experience with culture transformation, employee engagement, HR benefits, and change management communications.
- Knowledge or experience in the health care industry desired.
- Knowledge of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) cultural competency and communications practices.

Preferred Qualifications
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Participate in the planning and coordination of a diversified internal communications program to include developing and implementing promotional ideas and activities, coordinating staff assignments for maximum effectiveness, and fostering positive collaborations with organizational contacts.
Supervise, coordinate and execute system-wide internal communications partnering with DUHS (Duke University Health System) team leaders, facility management, operations, HR stakeholders, and entity communications teams.
Responsible for developing timely, relevant communications supporting team members' contributions, career development, and workplace operations.
Collaborate with visual storytellers, brand creatives, and employee advocates across our organization to advance people and culture campaigns delivered through multiple channels that engage diverse audiences and different consumer preferences and learning styles.
Creates, edits, reviews and enhances internal communication materials including presentations, articles, talking points, video scripts, and digital content for various audiences (Front Line Leaders and Individual Contributors).
Coordinate corporate communication strategy, planning, and implementation.
Practice customer service approach to problem solving and communication support.
Provide communication support for special events and DUHS (Duke University Health System) initiatives.
Monitor and evaluate communication effectiveness, investigate trends, and recommend and implement modifications to improve communications.
Represent assigned programs on behalf of the department and serve on various committees as needed.
Represent the department in various internal communications/marketing initiatives and seek opportunities to apply communications principles and tactics to support these initiatives.
Develop, edit, and maintain assigned DUHS (Duke University Health System) intranet pages.
Monitor DUHS (Duke University Health System) social media sites and tools and maintain an interactive and informative flow of content highlighting team members' accomplishments.
Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Preferred Qualifications at this Level
Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, or equivalent is required.
Experience: Full-time on-site, occasional remote work (role is not hybrid).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong writing skills, understanding and ability to interface with websites, social media tools, and other technologies, and understanding of internal communications principles.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Journalism, Business, or a related field is required.
Experience: Two years of directly related experience is required.
