Departmental Overview
The Graduate School of Journalism is a complex academic unit whose mission is to expand the worldwide impact of truth-seeking, fact-based and inclusive journalism by training the next generation of diverse journalists to become exceptional storytellers.
In a time when democracy is threatened, and the viability of traditional media is uncertain, Berkeley Journalism works at the center of a creative network of people, institutions and ideas to foster a culture of opportunity, innovation, excellence, and belonging. Our goals are nothing less than to deliver world-class education to Berkeley Journalism students and to revitalize the field by changing who gets to be a journalist.
The Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing will be a central actor in the School's broader purpose, leading the design and implementation of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary communications program that successfully positions Berkeley Journalism's leadership and leads the communications day-to-day achievements, and vision for the future with key audiences and stakeholders. This will be accomplished through design and implementation of a strategic communications plan based on compelling brand and identity management for Berkeley Journalism; building a team of communications professionals; high impact promotion of Berkeley Journalism's reporting and student work through available communications pathways, especially the School's website and on social media, as well as through support for the Dean (and other staff as appropriate) as an effective representative of the School; positioning the school in the broader national journalism landscape; and hands-on support for other School teams, such as admissions, alumni engagement, career services, and advancement, that directly benefit from an effective communications program.

Responsibilities
Develops and implements strategic communications plans for Berkeley Journalism and its various programs, in alignment with the larger UC Berkeley brand.
- Produces, writes, and oversees the production of a variety of written, visual, and electronic communications, specifically: The School's internal and external-newsletters and other email communications, online features, profiles and testimonials, event materials, web and social media content, brochures, print magazines, and annual reports.
- Brings creativity and the ability to leverage digital technology to convey Berkeley Journalism's mission and impact.
Identifies and implements strategies for creating greater visibility for Berkeley Journalism at the state and national level, including the development of relationships with key influencers and stakeholders.
- Conducts a regular assessment and leads an effort of innovative improvement of communications materials, messages, and platforms, including the Berkeley Journalism website, and the School's representation on social media.
Works closely with the Advancement team to advance fundraising and alumni engagement goals, with a priority on supporting an ambitious special fundraising campaign currently in early stage of development.
Manages and mentors a team of 2-3 communications professionals, and/or students with diverse expertise, such as writing, design and production, web and digital management, photography, and content marketing.
- Develops close working relationships with UC Berkeley Office of Public Affairs to ensure that the Berkeley Journalism story is shared widely and effectively to the entire Berkeley community.
Provides advice and counsel to School administration on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, branding, and problem resolution.
- Occasional consultation and execution in crisis and change communications.
- As part of a broader brand and identity strategy, creates opportunities for top-shelf media appearances, writing opportunities, and speaking engagements for the Dean of the School and other faculty and staff, and ensures that effective media training is provided.
Works closely with vendors such as designers, printers, photographers, web developers, and writers to deliver high quality marketing and communications pieces within budget and time constraints.
Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development opportunities; other duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long- and short-term strategic communication plans and advanced skills in communications project management.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including content strategy, writing, and editing; website and other digital media; design concepts and execution; social media; content marketing, and other applications.
- Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
- Experience building cohesive, high-performing teams through excellent management.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; high degree of emotional intelligence; demonstrated ability to work effectively with and build consensus among diverse populations, including faculty; demonstrated expertise building collaborations.
- Ability to contribute to an inclusive and equitable culture in a diverse workplace.
- Demonstrated skills in problem identification and resolution, sound judgment and decision- making, critical thinking/analysis, risk management, negotiation, creative problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, objectivity, sensitivity, discretion, professionalism, and exercise good judgment and tact.
- Demonstrated skills with common computer application programs, including the Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail Collaboration Suite, and databases.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the field and community of Journalism and its scope, particularly in California but also nationally in terms of competitor schools and programs.
- Advanced knowledge of the Berkeley School of Journalism, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; advanced knowledge of UC Berkeley and its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education.
- Thorough knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,400.00 - $170,800.00.
